Does time of day affect lipoprotein measurement independent of fasting state? Evidence-Based Answer: Triglyceride (TG) levels are lowest in the early morning after an overnight fast and vary significantly throughout the day in a manner not consistently correlated with meals. Total cholesterol (TC) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) levels do not vary significantly throughout the day. Extrapolating from the equation used to estimate low density lipoprotein (LDL) levels, obtaining lipoprotein measurements in the morning will likely provide the most consistent (and highest) estimation of LDL (SOR: C, nonrandomized controlled cohort and observational studies).
