Do home births have increased adverse neonatal outcomes? Bottom line: Home birth attended by certified midwives for appropriately selected low-risk pregnant women appears to be about as safe as hospital delivery, especially for multiparous women. The risk of adverse outcomes may be slightly increased in primiparas (SOR: B, prospective and retrospective cohorts). No strong evidence exists from randomized trials to favor either planned hospital birth or planned home birth for low-risk pregnant women.
