dc.description.abstract[ACCESS RESTRICTED TO THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI AT AUTHOR'S REQUEST.] A factorial experiment was designed and conducted to explore the effect of four variables, concentration, pressure, excess oxygen, and inlet temperature, on three responses, exothermic temperature difference, maximum temperature, and NJa. Concentration had an effect on all three metrics, excess oxygen had a negative effect maximum temperature and NJa, and inlet temperature had a positive effect on maximum temperature and a negative effect on NJa. Pressure was found to have a positive impact on NJa. Stoichiometric excess oxygen was found to be a functional replacement for alcohol co-fuels. Cow manure was treated by SCWO for the first time in the literature. Full conversion was achieved and the effluent was applied to plant growth studies showing a statistically significant improvement over the conventional method of land application of manure. A hydrothermal flame was generated in a SCWO reaction system for the first time without the use of an alcohol of fuel gas co-fuel or primary fuel. Construction and commissioning of a SCWO pilot unit was completed and support activities provided additional information to assist in operation of the unit.eng
