How effective is circumcision in reducing recurrent UTIs in boys with prior UTI? Evidence-Based Answer: For boys with a history of urinary tract infection (UTI) or high-grade (grade 3 or higher) vesicoureteral reflux, circumcision will prevent 87 to 261 UTIs per 1,000 boys. Circumcision will also likely reduce the risk of recurrent UTIs in premature infants (SOR: B, metaanalysis of RCT, cohort and case-control trials, and individual retrospective study).
