Investigating inequality using computer-assisted reporting

The issue of inequality—specifically racial inequality—has rarely received the attention from the media and public that it has in the wake of protests in Ferguson and elsewhere over police shootings. Many journalists are using data journalism tools to investigate issues of inequality beyond police violence. They see data reporting as conferring additional authority on investigations. This analysis examines how journalists reporting on inequality identify data sets and develop strategies to present their findings in forms that have an impact on audiences.
