Which patients with syncope should be admitted to the hospital?
Risk stratification of patients presenting with syncope in the ED is helpful in determining need for admission. This patient has risk factors associated with increased mortality including age >60 years and history of CHF. Despite the seemingly benign etiology of the syncopal episode, the presence of these risk factors suggests a higher risk of adverse outcomes. Additionally, specific findings on ED workup are associated with a higher risk of mortality and likely benefit from admission, including his lack of previous symptoms and male sex.
