Is there increased risk of melanoma in patients that use tanning beds? Evidence-Based Answer: Yes. The risk of melanoma is increased by about 20% in patients who have ever used a tanning bed compared to nonusers and the rate increases with frequent use (SOR: B, meta-analysis of cohort and case-control studies). There appears to be an increased risk of melanoma with use of newer tanning devices compared with older versions (SOR: B, case-control study).
