Are oral contraceptives effective for preventing pregnancy in women after gastric bypass surgery? EVIDENCE-BASED ANSWER: Evidence is insufficient to recommend oral contraceptives (OCs) by themselves for pregnancy prevention in women who have undergone gastric bypass surgery. Absorption of progestins may be impaired in patients after intestinal bypass procedures, and OC failure has been reported in patients after undergoing biliopancreatic bypass (SOR: C, case series, pharmacokinetic studies).
