Do adults with vitamin D deficiency have increased incidence of dementia? Evidence-based answer: Vitamin D deficiency in healthy older adults is associated with the development of all-cause dementia and Alzheimer’s disease (AD) later in life (SOR: B, prospective cohorts). Vitamin D concentrations are lower in patients with AD than in persons without AD (SOR: B, systematic review of case-control studies). However, associations do not prove causality and vitamin D levels should not be used as a diagnostic or prognostic biomarker for AD and related disorders (SOR: C, expert opinion).
