In institutionalized older adults, does vitamin D supplementation reduce falls compared with no supplementation? EVIDENCE-BASED ANSWER: Yes, vitamin D supplementation with or without calcium decreases the fall rate by 37%, but has inconsistent effects on risk of falling. Vitamin D-deficient patients and those also taking calcium seem to benefit more from vitamin D (SOR: A, systematic review of RCTs). The American Geriatrics Society recommends vitamin D supplementation for institutionalized adults with vitamin D insufficiency or at increased risk of falls (SOR: C, consensus-based guidelines).
