What is a safe dose for chronic daily acetaminophen users? EVIDENCE-BASED ANSWER: In pediatric patients, therapeutic doses of acetaminophen (less than or equal to 75 mg/kg per day orally or intravenously or less than or equal to 100 mg/kg per day rectally) appear safe for at least 5 days and perhaps a month (SOR: A, systematic review of various clinical trials). In adults taking acetaminophen <4 g daily, a dose-response relationship with long-term use appears likely for all cause mortality, cardiovascular and gastrointestinal (GI) adverse events (AEs), and new-onset renal disease (SOR: A, systematic review of cohort studies).
