Do antibiotics improve symptoms in acute bronchitis?
Do antibiotics improve symptoms in acute bronchitis? Evidence-based answer: Treatment of acute bronchitis with antibiotics shortens the duration of cough and the duration of feeling ill by about 12 hours, but with a significant increased risk of adverse effects (SOR: A, meta-analysis of RCTs). Specifically, treatment with amoxicillin results in fewer patients having worsening of symptoms between days 2 and 4 (number needed to treat [NNT]=30), but the overall duration of illness is unchanged (SOR: B, RCT).
