In adults with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), do probiotics improve gastrointestinal symptoms? Evidence-based answer: Yes, but the results do not appear to be dramatic. Probiotics lead to improvement in some global IBS symptom and quality-of-life scores, but inconsistent improvements in individual symptoms of pain and distension and no improvement in other individual symptoms. The most effective dose and probiotic strain/species is unknown (SOR: A, meta-analysis of RCTs and individual RCTs).
