Is it safe to use beta-agonists in patients who have congestive heart failure (CHF)? Evidence-based answer: There is concern. Beta-agonist use is associated with a dose-dependent increase in all-cause mortality and heart failure (HF) hospitalization in patients with known HF. Beta-agonist use is also associated with increased vasodilator use and mechanical ventilation in patients admitted for acute decompensated HF (SOR: B, 2 cohort study and 1 case-control study).
