Is hip or knee arthroplasty effective in promoting weight loss? Total knee and total hip arthroplasty do not appear to result in consistent weight loss in the postoperative period; only 14% to 49% of patients lost weight and most patients stayed the same weight or gained weight (SOR: B, systematic review of observational studies, single cohort study, and 2 case series). Higher preoperative body mass index (BMI) is associated with more patients losing weight than lower preoperative BMI (SOR: C, retrospective case series).
