Does fluoridated water decrease dental caries in children? Yes, community water fluoridation is associated with a 26% to 35% decrease in dental caries in children, but is also associated with a 12% incidence of esthetically displeasing fluorosis stains (SOR: B, systematic review of observational studies at high risk of bias). The US Public Health Service and several medical and dental specialty societies recommend community water fluoridation to prevent dental caries (SOR: C, expert opinion).
