dc.description.abstractOn June 1, 1955, a research program to study design and economic criteria for precast bridge units was undertaken by the Engineering Experiment Station of the University of Missouri in cooperation with the Missouri State Highway Department and the Bureau of Public Roads. The initial stage of the program included a comprehensive study of typical sections under simulated loading conditions in order to determine both their behavior at nominal working loads and their ultimate capacities with respect to flexural or shear failure. In order to provide a field check for the instrumentation devices developed for measuring strains and deflections, as well as to provide fundamental data for the proper planning of the main test program, a series of tests was run on 23 reinforced concrete beams with rectangular cross sections. This report presents the results of these tests and a survey of related engineering literature.eng
