Show me tomorrow: A report of the University of Missouri's impact on Missourians, 1985 and beyond

Abstract

" ... Guided by a long-range plan entitled " Toward Excellence : The Next Decade of the University of Missouri," which was adopted in October 1984, the University of Missouri is moving to fulfill challenging goals that have one purpose - to make the University the best it can be. Missouri and Missourians should expect no less from our state's sole public research university. The University of Missouri does not educate students only because there are students who want and need an education. It does not conduct research simply because we have faculty trained to find solutions to problems. Nor do we extend our knowledge throughout the state just because the government more than a century ago gave us land-grant responsibilities. We engage in these vital activities - teaching, research and public service - because they are essential to Missouri's economic and cultural prosperity both today and in the future for which we are building. I hope this report, my first as president of the University of Missouri, will explain the whys, as well as the hows, of our multiple missions. I hope, too, that it will help you understand the benefits you gain from these University missions and the dividends you receive from your investment in our activities. This report portrays the accomplishments of the University of Missouri and shows its even greater potential through the eyes of Missourians themselves. Theirs are stories of potential: the potential the governor sees in our mission to educate the state's human resource; the potential a labor leader sees in the University's ability to make labor more effective; and the potential the leader of the state's largest employer sees in the University's partnership with industry. ...
