dc.description.abstract[ACCESS RESTRICTED TO THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI AT AUTHOR'S REQUEST.] Tape winding creates a composite structure by the reinforcement of material, and it has been commonly used in industry. However, the operation of a manual machine would be strenuous and time-consuming. The development of control system is the main process to automate the 2-axis winder. While the change of speed is necessary, the force on material determine the quality of products. The control goal is to track the output tension on tape with the user-defined value. In the feedback loop, stepper motor is selected as the actuator for more accuracy control with position. The research will provide a math analysis of the real model, as well as the application of different control theories. Conventional PID algorithm reduces the stead-state error as well as respond time. On the other hand, fuzzy PD controller has higher adaptability to disturbance and better dynamic properties. Both the simulation and test results will be discussed in the thesis. The software simulation includes the verification of the designed controller and the construction of user-oriented interface.eng
