dc.description.abstract"The civil engineering department of the University of Missouri has for a long time, conducted various tests and collected data in regard to the drainage areas, total run off etc. of Hinkson and Grindstone creeks. Mr. Aguilar and myself determined to attack the chemical end of the problem and to determine the mineral constituents of the water. This mineral analysis would be of value in determining the availability of the water for both domestic and industrial purposes. The chemical analysis would be of use in determining the quality of various constituents of the soil--valuable for crop production--which are leeched out by the action of the rain water in seeping through the soil. The major portion of the data herein presented was determined by Mr. Aguilar and myself in the spring of 1911. There are some new data determined by myself alone, which is of the same character as the previous data, with this exception, however, it was deemed inadvisable to determine the electrical conductivity as the water had stood for so long a time in glass containers that its conductivity would not represent the conductivity due to the mineral dissolved from the soil alone but would be affected by various constituents which had been dissolved out of the glass. The methods of analysis employed were essentially the same as those described in the paper No. 236 (1909) of the United States Geological Survey, on "The Quality of Surface Water in United States," except in the determination of iron for which a different method has been followed."--Introduction.eng
