Literature didactics : how to use literature in a foreign language classroom (with examples for the German Andenglish language classroom)
Abstract
[ACCESS RESTRICTED TO THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI--COLUMBIA AT REQUEST OF AUTHOR.] Literature plays an important role in people's lives, and it has an equally important function in language learning. Reading helps children, in their mother tongue, to broaden their knowledge of words, of linguistic structures, and their cultural awareness. The same applies for foreign language learning and therefore the inclusion of literature in a foreign language class is important. This thesis presents ideas and provides examples of how to incorporate a wide range of literature into the German and English language classroom; how to choose appropriate literature for the classroom; and will further reflect on what reading can do for students in a positive classroom environment. This thesis provides models for using literature in both English and German foreign language classrooms, for different learner ages and skill levels.
