The Achilles tendon connects the heel bone in the back of the foot to the calf muscle. We use this tendon when we stand on tiptoe, run, jump or play sports such as tennis or basketball. Achilles tendonitis is the medical term for when this tendon becomes inflamed from overuse or is damaged by small tears. Achilles tendonitis causes pain and sometimes swelling just above the heel in the back of the lower leg.
