Is SMBG effective for patients with noninsulin-requiring diabetes?

As the number of patients diagnosed as having diabetes mellitus type 2 (DM-2) continues to rise, so do the challenges of managing this chronic condition. Although self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) is clearly beneficial for patients with diabetes who are using insulin,1 the effectiveness of SMBG for the many patients with DM-2 not using insulin has not been established. Physicians generally advise their patients with DM-2 taking oral medication to do SMBG2 despite conflicting evidence of its effectiveness for patients using oral hypoglycemic agents.
