Worried notes : poems
Abstract
[ACCESS RESTRICTED TO THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI AT AUTHOR'S REQUEST.] The creative portion of this dissertation, Worried Notes: Poems, is a collection that engages the American vernacular-song tradition and specifically the strategy of worrying, inherent to blues music, in which one troubles the materials of expression. Through sonic effects, variated popular music and poetry allusions, and extensive wordplay, the poems develop a vocabulary for the poem as a literal and metaphorical "worried note": a message that challenges textual knowledge with the bodily way of knowing inherent to poetry's orality and aurality. The collection thematically explores how song shapes experience and worries our reaction to personal suffering and historical atrocity.
