Although omega-3 fatty acids can substantially improve triglyceride levels, the evidence is conflicting as to whether dietary or supplemental omega-3 fatty acids alter the patient-oriented outcomes of total mortality or cardiovascular events. Omega-3 fatty acids continue to be recommended by the American Heart Association. (SOR C, based on expert opinion.)
