Patients with severe hypertension with evidence of end-organ compromise should be referred to the emergency department for acute intervention. Patients who present with no end-organ compromise should be managed with the initiation of at least 2 antihypertensive medications for gradual reduction of blood pressure (BP) to <160/100 mmHg over 24 to 48 hours.(SOR C, based on expert opinion.)
