New evidence supports metformin use for gestational diabetes

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), which develops inabout 5% to 7% of pregnancies, is increasing in prevalence. GDM increases maternal and fetal morbidity during pregnancy and delivery and is associated with an increased long-term risk of overt diabetes for both mother and child. Oral metformin is a logical option for treating GDM. However, outcome studies of its use during pregnancy have been mixed.
