Abstract: Antioxidants are no more effective than placebo in the prevention of age-related macular degeneration (SOR A, based on meta-analyses). Antioxidants (beta carotene, vitamins C and E) in combination with zinc have a modest benefit in reducing the progression to advanced macular degeneration (SOR B, based on a single randomized controlled trial).
