Spirometry is the gold standard test used in diagnosing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). A postbronchodilator FEV1/FVC ratio less than 0.7 or FEV1 less than 80% of the predicted value is diagnostic for COPD. (SOR B, based on diagnostic cohort studies.)
