Abstract: Musculoskeletal complaints account for more than 1 in 5 primary care and emergency department visits, with ankle injuries making up a significant fraction. In the 2005-2006 academic year, 23% of sports-related injuries in US high school students involved the ankle. A meta-analysis of sports injuries in 38 countries found the ankle second only to the knee in injury rates among the 70 sports reviewed. The ankle was the most common complaint seen in 24 of these sports, mainly team sports and court games, and 84% (11,847/14,098) of documented ankle injuries were sprains.
