dc.description.abstract | "One of the happiest facts in the history of twentieth-century American music is the chronological coincidence of the glory days of Tin Pan Alley and the emergence and evolution of jazz. Both of these grand musical traditions "came of age" in the early decades of this century and proved to be mutually beneficial. In fact, at this point, it is difficult to imagine one without the other-in spite of their markedly different identities. And, although they both seem to be ideal musical expressions of the American personality in the popular sphere, neither owes its genesis to the American mainstream. Both the Tin Pan Alley popular song and jazz are the generous gifts of minority cultures to American society. Jazz, of course, is one of the several important strains of African-American music. The creation of the popular song in the early decades of the twentieth century, like so many other aspects of American popular entertainment of the day, was primarily the work of Jewish-American immigrants."--Program Notes. | eng |
