Hubbard Stret Dance Company ... Wednesday, March 8, 1989
Abstract
"Chicago's own Hubbard Street Dance Company is entering its second decade of entertaining audiences with its own highly acclaimed style of dance. The original company of four women was formed in late 1977, when Barbara Cohen of Urban Gateways asked Lou Conte to organize a program for senior citizen centers. Conte, a veteran dancer and choreographer and founder of the Lou Conte Dance Studio in Chicago, created an entertainment featuring various styles of American dance. The new troupe performed throughout the city under the auspices of the Mayor's Office for Senior Citizens and the Handicapped. Cohen subsequently became the Company's first executive director; Claire Bataille, now assistant artistic director and dancer, was one of the founding members. The Company's name was taken from its original location and, although now situated in larger facilities, the Lou Conte Dance Studio remains its home."--page 18.
