Abstract: Pregnant women of Southeast Asian, Mediterranean, and African ancestry should be offered antenatal screening for hemoglobinopathies, as they are at higher risk of being carriers. Northern European, Japanese, Korean, Inuit, and Native American patients are at low risk of being carriers. Once carrier status is detected, partner testing and genetic counseling should be offered.
