School of Dentistry (UMKC)
The UMKC School of Dentistry can trace its lineage to more than a century ago when the Kansas City Dental College was founded in 1881. While its name has changed, the school's tradition of excellence has continued for more than 115 years.
The educational experiences available to dental, dental hygiene, advanced education and graduate students are rich and varied. The school's first-rate faculty comprises scholars, scientists and specialists, each dedicated to providing a quality education that is both comprehensive and individualized.

Assessment of Underrepresented Minority Enrollment in Orthodontic Residency Programs
(2022)This study examined current advanced orthodontic resident demographics and their association with factors residents’ rank as most important for residency program selection and future practice plans. A 10-question survey, ... -
Effect of Build Angle and Model Body Type (Solid vs Shell) on Accuracy of 3D-Printed Orthodontic Models Using a DLP Printer
(2022)This study examined the effect that print angulation and model body type (solid vs. shell) have on the accuracy of orthodontic models printed with a digital light processing (DLP) 3D printer. The following six configuration ... -
The Current Use of Soft Tissue Lasers in Orthodontic Practices
(2022)This study investigated the use of soft tissue lasers in orthodontic practices, specifically whether the orthodontist demographics and practice characteristics influenced the use of soft tissue laser within an office. The ... -
Effects of Flavonoids on Collagen Biostability, Remineralization and Long Term Durability of Natural and Denatured Dentin
(2022)Collagen biostability in the resin dentin interface determines the longevity of dental composite restorations. Maintaining this biostability becomes even more challenging in the altered and denatured substrate of caries ... -
The role of AI and machine learning in contemporary orthodontics
(Asian Pacific Orthodontic Society, 2021)In the past 20 years, the orthodontic profession has adopted digital technologies such as computer-assisted tooth movement, automated staged dental aligner production, and 3D simulations. Until recently, the use of ... -
Digital Technology and Digital Workflow Application in the Current Landscape of Private Practice Orthodontics
(2021)This study examined which demographic factors and practice characteristics influence orthodontists to utilize a digital workflow in their private practice, as well as which factors influence their opinions on the current ... -
Orthodontists' perceptions of teledentistry and remote dental monitoring in orthodontic treatment
(2021)The purpose of this study was two-fold. First, to survey orthodontists to determine the clinician demographics and practice characteristics that may influence the utilization of teledentistry and/or remote dental monitoring. ... -
Advanced Education Orthodontics Program Curricula Pre- and Post-COVID-19
(2021)A survey was conducted to investigate faculty numbers across advanced education orthodontic programs and its association with curriculum, didactic learning, utilization of distance education, and impact of the COVID-19 ... -
Identification of Cell Types that Define Embryonic Submandibular and Parotid Salivary Glands Using Single Cell RNA Sequencing
(University of Missouri -- Kansas City, 2019)Branching organs including the kidney, mammary, and salivary glands arise as epithelial buds that are morphologically very similar. However, the mesenchyme is known to guide epithelial morphogenesis and to help govern ... -
A Family Affected By Autosomal Dominant Non-Syndromic Tooth Agenesis - A Genetic Study
(2020)This study evaluated a family exhibiting the phenotype of non-syndromic tooth agenesis through whole exome sequencing to potentially identify pathogenic variants. Four family members, three with tooth agenesis and one ... -
Effects of fluoride varnish application and phosphate buffered saline solution with or without demineralizing conditions prior to bracket bonding on subsequent enamel-bracket shear bond strength
(2020)This study examined the effect of sodium fluoride varnish (V) and phosphate buffered saline (PBS) solution with or without demineralization (DM) prior to bracket bonding on subsequent enamel-bracket shear bond strength ... -
Retreatment following in-person clear aligner therapy, direct-to-consumer clear aligner therapy, and conventional fixed orthodontic appliances
(2020)This study examined the effect of original orthodontic treatment modality, in particular, in-person clear aligner therapy (CAT), direct-to-consumer clear aligner therapy (DTC CAT), and conventional fixed appliances, on ... -
Influence of suture technique on ridge dimensions and keratinized tissue after alveolar ridge preservation: a pilot study
(2020)The alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) procedure was designed to minimize bone loss following tooth extraction to allow for implant placement in the prosthetically-driven position, and reduce the need for subsequent grafting ... -
Association of Nasal Septum Area and Deviation with Anteroposterior Maxillary Position and Facial Skeletal Asymmetries
(University of Missouri -- Kansas City, 2018)During growth of the craniofacial structure, the nasal septum is posited to exert a downward and forward effect on the midface. This phenomena is well documented in vitro and on animals but is still uncertain in humans. ... -
