Evening of jazz ... March 7, 1989, Jesse Auditorium
Abstract
"The JAZZ STUDIES PROGRAM at the University of Missouri - Columbia is designed to develop both performance and writing skills and give students the wide-ranging flexibility necessary to meet the varying demands of today's musical world. Throughout the course of study there is an emphasis of student awareness of, and preparation in, the "business" which forms the backbone of all of today's commercial arts. These goals are pursued through regular rehearsals, concerts, and recordings of the Studio Jazz Ensemble, the Jazz Lab Band, and several diverse Jazz Combos: performance of student arrangements and compositions; and academic courses in Jazz Improvisation, and Jazz Methods and Materials. The quality of performance by student groups has resulted in "outstanding ensembles and soloists" awards at the Notre Dame and Wichita Jazz Festivals and numerous invitations for guest appearances throughout Missouri and the Midwest."--page 7.
