In addition to rest, ice, compression, elevation, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), functional treatment of ankle sprains improves certain outcomes compared with immobilization. Evidence is insufficient to determine which functional treatment is superior, and the effectiveness of surgery compared with conservative modalities remains unclear.
