Department of Mathematics and Statistics (UMKC)
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics offers coursework leading to the bachelor of arts and bachelor of science degrees in mathematics. The graduate degrees available are the master of science degree, with concentrations in either mathematics or statistics, and the department participates in the UMKC School of Graduate Studies Interdisciplinary Ph.D. program.
These programs are designed to develop the student's own knowledge of mathematics or statistics, and to provide the tools and understanding necessary for the study of other scientific and quantitative fields.

Three Essays on the Limits and Possibilities of Economic Sovereignty in the Eurozone
(2022)There is no disputing Germany’s dominant economic role within the eurozone (EZ) and the broader European Union. Economic leadership, however, entails responsibilities, especially in a world system of monetary production ... -
Dynamics of Economic Corruption
(2022)Corruption, especially in developing countries, has been shown to have large persistent effects on inequality and economic growth. Efforts to eradicate or suppress corruption over the last two decades have floundered. This ... -
Sampling Schemes For Estimating Software Reliability
(2022)Any software system of non-trivial size cannot be easily and completely tested because the domain of all possible inputs is complex and very large. In this study, we use a technique called partition testing, in which we ... -
Convolutional Neural Networks for Early Diagnosing of Breast Cancer
(2022)Due to the high demand for mammograms, radiologists are swamped with many patients' mammograms. Radiologists' workload has increased dramatically over the last 15 years during on-call hours. This rise is due to an increase ... -
Development of an advanced Hybrid (U)RANS/LES turbulence models using Scale Adaptive Simulation (SAS) method
(2022)Turbulence is a ubiquitous phenomenon occurring in most practical fluid flows. The accurate prediction of turbulent flows is evident in optimizing and developing highly efficient modern fluid systems. Several turbulence ... -
Comparative Investigation of LIBS Spectra and Crater Morphology During Laser Ablation of Eutectic BiSn Alloys
(2022)Laser-based methods such as pulsed laser deposition (PLD) that are used for fabricating structural and functional materials are ripe for dramatic improvement. However, because laser–material interactions are dependent on ... -
A Mathematical Modelling Approach to Analyze the Dynamics of Math Anxiety
(2022)The main objective of this study is to develop a mathematical modeling framework for a deeper understanding of dynamics of math anxiety as a contagious process. Borrowing from theories of the spread of infectious disease, ... -
A Cubic Spline Projection Method for Computing Stationary Density Functions of Frobenius-Perron Operator
(2022)Stationary density functions of Frobenius-Perron operators have critical applications in many fields of science and engineering. Accordingly, approximating stationary density functions f* is important and the focus of this ... -
The Forgotten Lands: A Comparative Analysis of Economic Systems in Transition
(2022)This study focuses on transition economies of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). These countries have lagged considerably in their transformation from a planned to a market-based system and are therefore ... -
A modeling framework for spatial transmission of Covid-19 in local communities
(2022)COVID-19 is the recent infectious disease caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2). Because the transmissibility of the virus is relatively high and the outbreaks remained undetected ... -
A study of carbon and iron charged point defects in gallium nitride: electronic structure implications for high-power photoconductive solid state switch applications
(2021)There is growing demand for high-performance electronics in high volt- age, high current, and high frequency efficiency requirements that current materials (e.g., Si) are not fulfilling. Within the last few years, the ... -
Moving Mesh Finite Element Method for Time Dependent Convection-Diffusion Problems
(2021)The moving mesh finite element method (MM-FEM) has been a significant force in numerically approximating solutions to differential equations that otherwise exhibit spurious, artificial oscillations. This is especially true ... -
Vision task driven image super-resolution and image enhancement
(2021)In visual object recognition problems, low-light exposure, and low-quality images present great challenges in a variety of navigation and surveillance use cases. Recent advancements in deep learning-based methods may ... -
Development of pulsed power sources using self-sustaining nonlinear transmission lines and high-voltage solid-state switches
(2021)The demand for short pulses capable of delivering high peak power is increasing by leaps and bounds over the last few decades. These pulses are garnering attraction from a wide variety of end-users associated with the ... -
Disaster and infrastructure scene understanding
(2021)Urban scenes are visually complex as they contain physical objects and their spatial-temporal dynamic processes, including natural disasters and human-centered socio-economic activities. Image-based understanding of urban ... -
RUPEE: A Big Data Approach to Indexing and Searching Protein Structures
(2021)Given the close relationship between protein structure and function, protein structure searches have long played an established role in bioinformatics. Despite their maturity, existing protein structure searches either ... -
Measuring Level of Degradation in Power Semiconductor Devices using Emerging Techniques
(2021)High thermal and electrical stress, over a period of time tends to deteriorate the health of power electronic switches. Being a key element in any high-power converter systems, power switches such as insulated-gate bipolar ... -
Fault Diagnosis and Condition Monitoring of Power Electronic Components Using Spread Spectrum Time Domain Reflectometry (SSTDR) and the Concept of Dynamic Safe Operating Area (SOA)
(2021)Fault diagnosis and condition monitoring (CM) of power electronic components with a goal of improving system reliability and availability have been one of the major focus areas in the power electronics field in the last ... -
Identification and Development of a Reliable Framework to Predict Passive Scalar Transport for Turbulent Bounded Shear Flows
(2020)Heat transfer modeling plays an integral role in optimization and development of highly efficient modern thermal-fluid systems. However, currently available heat flux models suffer from fundamental shortcomings. For example, ... -
Ferroelectric System Dynamics and the Properties of Ferroelectric / Two-Dimensional Electron Gas Heterostructures: a Ginzburg–Landau Study
(University of Missouri -- Kansas City, 2017)Understanding the electronic response of materials to applied electric fields is an outstanding goal in solid-state theory. One aspect of this goal is to accurately predict the electric polarization of certain materials ...
