Title: What is the safest and most effective medical option for termination of pregnancy?
Author: Hirshfeld, Meredith; Stulberg, Debra
Date: 2010-09
Publisher: Family Physicians Inquiries Network
Citation: Evidence Based Practice 13(9): 05.
Abstract: Up to 63 days' gestation, 200 mg oral mifepristone followed in 24 to 48 hours by 800 mcg transmucosal misoprostol (vaginal or buccal) is 92% to 96% effective and has less than a 2% risk of hemorrhage or infection (SOR: A, based on 1 high-quality systematic review and 2 additional RCTs). Infection risk may be further reduced by administering misoprostol buccally, STD screening, or administering prophylactic antibiotics (SOR: C, based on 1 observational study).
