After the crop : the impact of downsizing on photojournalism quality
Abstract
A content analysis (N=1,288) of four mid-size regional newspapers before and after periods of layoffs and workforce reduction showed that photographic quality had been negatively affected. Using the quantitative data, in-depth interviews were conducted with each newspaper's visual manager to provide context for the content analysis. Approaches to managing a smaller workforce varied and resources were strained, but all placed getting meaningful information to the readership as their first priority.
