Title: Atypical antipsychotic drugs for the treatment of bipolar disorder
Keywords: pharmacological treatment
Date: 2010-10
Publisher: Family Physicians Inquiries Network
Citation: Evidence Based Practice 13(10): 21.
Abstract: In general, atypical antipsychotics produce antipsychotic responses with fewer acute extrapyramidal adverse effects than “conventional” antipsychotic drugs. Atypical antipsychotics are associated with lower rates of the development of this neurological adverse effect in comparison with the older, conventional agents. Atypical antipsychotics may also treat negative symptoms and improve cognitive functioning.
