Abstract

School security is an issue faced by all school districts. Some school districts in the state of Missouri made the decision to arm members of their staff to provide an additional layer of defense. This qualitative study looks at the lived experiences of PK-12 school staff members who carry a concealed weapon for Shield Solutions. The participants are school employees first and remain concealed at all times. The participants have all been trained by Shield Solutions through their School Employee Firearms Training (SEFT) course and would utilize their training if there were an active threat on their school campus. The twenty-six participants all described their school district as rural with extended law enforcement response times. The findings revealed the impacts on the participants' personal and professional lives. This study revealed that having concealed staff showed no impact on the learning environment and presented school districts with a cost effective way to have armed security on their campus.
