Proceedings of the Justin R. Morris Vineyard Mechanization Symposium (2008)
(University of Missouri Extension, 2008) Morris, Justin R.; Striegler, R. Keith
Grape growers are increasingly interested in reducing the cost and amount of labor necessary for grape production. Availability of labor is also a major concern for growers in many grape production regions. Mechanized vineyard operations are increasingly being viewed as a viable means of reducing production costs and labor requirements while maintaining or increasing product quality. The Justin R. Morris Vineyard Mechanization Symposium was held during the 2008 Midwest Grape and Wine Conference to provide a forum for discussion of the available technologies and future trends in vineyard mechanization. The proceedings of this 1.5-day event provide thorough coverage of the presentations delivered at the symposium. Current and prospective grape producers will find within the proceedings a great deal of valuable information that can be difficult to obtain from other sources. The proceedings of this symposium address the following subjects: The costs and benefits of vineyard mechanization, Site-related challenges to vineyard mechanization, and solutions to many of those challenges, Current vineyard mechanization practices being employed in numerous prominent grape-producing regions around the world, Prospects for improvement of current vineyard mechanization practices and equipment. Current and prospective commercial grape growers interested in mechanizing vineyard operations will find great utility and value in this publication.

Understanding and Preventing Freeze Damage in Vineyards: Workshop Proceedings (2007)
(University of Missouri Extension, 2007) Institute for Continental Climate Viticulture and Enology (MU)
The proceedings of this December 2007 workshop will be a valuable resource for current and aspiring producers wishing to understand freeze injury in grapevines and of special interest to those wishing to explore the available means of preventing this injury to grapevines and other horticultural crops. The proceedings contain information on means of preventing freeze damage to grapevines and other horticultural crops under frost and frost/freeze conditions. Passive methods of freeze prevention in vineyards such as site selection, cultivar selection, pruning methods, and delaying grapevine bud burst through the application of oils are covered thoroughly. Active methods of prevention such as wind machine and helicopter use are presented, with detailed attention given to the design and operation of overhead sprinkling systems. The physiology of freeze injury in grapevines during both dormant and active growth stages is explained well. An account of the meteorological conditions that set the stage for the record-breaking April 2007 freeze is also provided. Data on the performance of many hybrid and American grape cultivars following this abnormal and historic event is included.
