Item Factors Affecting the Likelihood of Corn Rootworm Bt Seed Adoption(AgBioForum, 2003) Payne, James; Fernandez-Cornejo, Jorge; Daberkow, StanThe likelihood of adopting corn rootworm (CRW) Bt seed technology was analyzed using an ordered logit model. Data used to estimate the model came from United States Department of Agriculture s 2001 Agricultural Resource Management Survey. Statistically significant variables include operator age, farm type, farm size, rootworm loss and current treatment for rootworm, off farm labor, and Bt technology for corn borer. The likelihood of adoption did not appear to be related to crop rotation, tillage system, new variant CRW region, or education.Item Development and Marketing Strategies for Functional Foods(AgBioForum, 2003) Mark-Herbert, CeciliaAs the boundaries between food and medicine are fading, businesses face new challenges. A market pull business model is presented for creating awareness among consumers.Item Research Prizes : A Mechanism to Reward Agricultural Innovation in Low-Income Regions(AgBioForum, 2003) Masters, William A.This paper identifies market failures that limit biotechnology research for farmers in low-income regions and proposes a system of cash prizes to reward the dissemination of successful innovations. The prize authority would specify a target region(e.g., Sub-Saharan Africa) and offer to pay a fixed proportion(e.g., 20%) of the estimated social value of any innovation, computed using standard procedures, to buy out the innovation into the public domain. However, in the European Unionand elsewhere, GM food with mandatory labeling has disappeared from the retail shelves. Food processors economic incentives may explain why mandatory labeling has so far failed to provide consumer choice.Item Climate Change for Biotechnology? UK Public Opinion 1991- 2002(AgBioForum, 2003) Gaskell, George; Allum, Nick; Bauer, Martin W.; Jackson, Jonathan; Howard, Susan; Lindsey, NicolaThe 1991 2002 Eurobarometer surveys show a steady decline in optimism about biotechnology in the United Kingdom (UK) through the 1990s. After 1999, there is more optimism and less opposition to agri-food biotechnologies. The paper discusses possible causes of these changes and argues that the UK public is still open to persuasion.
