Item The Bosom Serpent Legend through history : how the legend changes to address modern anxieties(Rhetoric and Composition Program, University of Missouri, 2013) McCall, LaineIn its simplest form, the Bosom Serpent legend complex includes any story in which a person believes that an animal is living inside of their body. Normally the animal is a snake or lizard, although amphibians and worms are becoming the most common in modern variants (Bennett). Most Bosom Serpent legends begin in the same way: a person mysteriously becomes sick and complains that it feels like something is squirming around inside of them.Item A Feminist critique : the value of a body(Rhetoric and Composition Program, University of Missouri, 2013) Weaver, HilaryThe poem, "The Bog Queen" by Seamus Heaney is one that, through rhetorical tools of personification, communicates the role of the female body in the later years. While the poem can be seen as a literal illustration of the decay of nature as a reflection of the influences of society's wasteful actions toward natural resources, it is also a depiction of a society heavily dependent on women as objects of sexual desire.Item Growing up through food(Rhetoric and Composition Program, University of Missouri, 2013) Zhu, JingtingAs a Chinese person, I often feel unsatisfied with some aspects of my country just like some British complaining about foggy weather in London. But I have never been picky about China's food. Moreover, sometimes I feel I'm lucky to live in China with so many great foods in varying cuisines throughout the whole big country. If you are a chowhound like me, you know what I am talking about. This is the tenth month I have been in Columbia, which also means that I have been away from home for nearly one year. For me, homesick not only means missing family and friends but also means missing food in my hometown, whatever sold in the restaurant or cooked by my mom.Item The evolution of Russian media(Rhetoric and Composition Program, University of Missouri, 2013) Ralph, KaylenIn May of 2012, the official newspaper of the Communist Party in Russia celebrated its 100th anniversary of publication. Founded in St. Petersburg in 1912, Pravda prospered throughout most of the twentieth century, with a "print run of millions in its heyday." After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, the publication was banned by Boris Yeltsin, only to be taken over and revived by the Russian Communist Central Party in 1997. (Heritage 2012) After this hundred-year history, Boris Komotsky, a senior member of the Communist Party with ties to Pravda, stated, "We are the only newspaper in Russia today that has not changed its form and content" (Heritage 2012). Refusal to adapt to the constantly evolving cultural climate of Russia is a bad business model, which is evidenced by the newspaper's constant stream of financial troubles and steadily declining readership. But despite its controversial mission statement and the questionable veracity of its content, Pravda is a publication that by nature of its distinct history embodies a uniquely Russian persona and perspective for its loyal readers.Item Emmy for Ethos(Rhetoric and Composition Program, University of Missouri, 2013) Tesoro, MarisaWhile The Daily Show with Jon Stewart is a comedy show first, there is a great deal of substance to it as well. The mock-reporters, bleeping of profanity and satirical expressions of anger serve as the sugar that helps to diminish the bitter taste of reality that is political news. These elements of the show should not be taken as an insult to the journalistic world but rather be seen as adding to the show's ethos. And the show's ethos, as demonstrated by the Aristotlelian argument made by Jonathan Barbur and Trischa Goodnow and the recent television awards show, is what is needed by a good variety show to earn it a tenth Emmy award.
