Item Production and Marketing Characteristics of Adopters and Nonadopters of Transgenic Cotton Varieties in California(AgBioForum, 2002) Wolf, Marianne McGarry, 1952-; Gelke, John; Lindo, Michelle; Doub, Philip; Lohse, BrianThis paper analyzes the characteristics of early adopters of transgenic cotton varieties in California and explains the factors driving such early adoption. The research was conducted through the use of a mail survey that was distributed to all California cotton growers during December 2000 and January 2001. A response rate of 16% of the 1,300 cotton growers generated a sample size of 206 California cotton growers.Item Unacknowledged Health Benefits of Genetically Modified Food : Salmon and Heart Disease Deaths(AgBioForum, 2002) Lutter, Randall W.; Tucker, KatherineThe marketing of genetically modified (GM) salmon will lower salmon prices and increase consumption of salmon, an exceptionally good source of omega-3 fatty acids linked to lower risk of heart disease. We estimate that the resulting increase in omega-3 intake will prevent between 600 and 2,600 deaths per year in the United States.Item Consumer Attitudes Towards Genetic Modification, Functional Foods, and Microorganisms : A Choice Modeling Experiment for Beer(AgBioForum, 2002) Burton, Michael; Pearse, DaleA choice modeling approach was used to identify consumer preferences for various hypothetical forms of genetic modification in beer, using a sample from Western Australia. It was found that respondents were equally averse to first-generation modification in either plants or microorganisms but were willing to pay a premium for a product with positive health benefits.Item The Payoffs to Transgenic Field Crops : An Assessment of the Evidence(AgBioForum, 2002) Marra, Michele C.; Pardey, Philip G.; Alston, Julian M.The purpose of this study is to compile and characterize the farm-level evidence of the impacts of transgenic field crops available in the public domain and to determine if any general implications can be drawn from it. The studies show that, compared to their conventional counterparts, transgenic crops have consistently higher average profit and, for the most part, lower pesticide use.Item Product Differentiation Alternatives : Identity Preservation, Segregation, and Traceability(AgBioForum, 2002) Smyth, Stuart J.; Phillips, Peter W. B.Numerous terminologies exist to describe product differentiation systems. The leading terms are identity preservation, segregation,and traceability. Frequently, the terminology surrounding these distinct systems is used interchangeably. This creates confusion within the agrifood industry. This paper offers working definitions and a practical taxonomy for identity preservation, segregation, and traceability.
