Item NIR fluorescent sensors for blood pH and fructose(University of Missouri--Columbia, 2013) Shao, Xiaole; Shao, Xiaole; University of Missouri-Columbia. Graduate School. Theses and Dissertations. Dissertations. 2013 Dissertations[ACCESS RESTRICTED TO THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI AT AUTHOR'S REQUEST.] Blood serum parameters are tightly associated with human beings' physiological activities, therefore the real-time monitoring of blood serum parameters attacks great attention. Many fluorescent sensors exist to measure such parameters, but most would be readily exclude from serum. A novel NIR fluorescent pH sensor was designed and synthesized to test the sensor system in the serum. This NIR- pH sensor was trapped inside RBCs to characterize its response and the result shows the RBC trapped NIR-pH sensor behaves similar as in the free conditions. Based on the NIR fluorophore, a series of novel NIR fluorescent fructose were also designed and synthesized. By using different linkers, these NIR fluorescent sensors showed different binding affinities and fluorescence increase. It appeared the rigid linker had the highest binding affinity and the lowest fluorescence increase upon binding with the fructose. These NIR fluorescence fructose sensors would be used as the reference for the future glucose design.Item Insidious role of complacency in business-to-business relationships(University of Missouri--Columbia, 2013) Kozlenkova, Irina V.; Kozlenkova, Irina V.; University of Missouri-Columbia. Graduate School. Theses and Dissertations. Dissertations. 2013 Dissertations[ACCESS RESTRICTED TO THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI AT AUTHOR'S REQUEST.] This research draws on resource-based theory and heuristic versus systematic processing model and examines the effects of intentional and unintentional negative behaviors on performance of exchange relationships. Intentional negative behaviors investigated in this study include opportunism and conflict, while complacency represents an unintentional negative behavior. The research, conducted in two studies with experimental and survey-based data, investigates the role of complacency in the exchange process relative to intentional negative behaviors and across different types of performance outcomes. Furthermore, the research empirically tests factors, which suppress or enhance negative effects of complacency. The results of the research show that complacency adversely impacts exchange performance through a different mechanism than intentional negative behaviors of opportunism and conflict, namely through decreasing the deployment of exchange capabilities. Cognitive load worsens this negative relationship, while new relationship stage decreases the negative effects of complacency on the deployment of exchange capabilities. The research provides numerous important contributions that will benefit both theory and practice.Item The relationship between satisfaction with life as a whole and three other factors (domain satisfaction, social network ties, and perceptions of service delivery): Rural Russian village panel study 1995-2003(University of Missouri--Columbia, 2013) Baatar, Baljmaa; Baatar, Baljmaa; University of Missouri-Columbia. Graduate School. Theses and Dissertations. Dissertations. 2013 Dissertations[ACCESS RESTRICTED TO THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI AT AUTHOR'S REQUEST.] It is found in the literature that satisfaction with life as a whole (LS) is very multi-dimensional subjective indicator. This dissertation wanted to see this multi-dimensionality of LS and examined LS from three different angles. Using rural Russian village panel data 1995-2003, the dissertation conducted three different analyses. Scholars say that LS and happiness studies are important for social, economic, and public policy development. The significant relationships between LS and all other factors including specific life domain satisfactions, social network ties, mental health, and perceptions of local service delivery, in this dissertation, implied that LS can be connected to many different areas of society. Studies in this dissertation then showed that rural Russian village residents' satisfaction with life as whole was significantly associated with many factors. For instance, specific life domain satisfactions such as family satisfaction, marital satisfaction, income satisfaction, and village satisfaction - all was significantly related to LS in the study. The dissertation tested their two-way reciprocal relationship and the relationship from domain satisfaction to LS was substantial in the panel study. All results in the studies were quite close to results in other similar studies found in the literature. This is another importance of this research.Item The relationship between high school sport participation and subsequent health behaviors of college young adults(University of Missouri--Columbia, 2013) Asigbee, Fiona M.; Asigbee, Fiona M.; University of Missouri-Columbia. Graduate School. Theses and Dissertations. Dissertations. 2013 Dissertations[ACCESS RESTRICTED TO THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI AT AUTHOR'S REQUEST.] Researchers have gathered irrefutable evidence substantiating that the increase in childhood obesity rates is primarily due to environmental and lifestyle factors such as (a) poor nutrition and (b) excessive sedentary behavior (Bentivegna; Powell, Han, & Chaloupka, 2010; Wilfley et al., 2007). Therefore, adequate physical activity (PA) and a diet rich in nutrient dense foods can help decrease a person's risk for becoming obese. Instead of focusing public health efforts on new interventions trying to elicit health behavior changes, this study attempted to highlight an overlooked organization that can be used to instill positive health behaviors in young children -- high school sport. More specifically, the primary purpose of this study was to determine whether there was a relationship between high school (HS) sport involvement and subsequent college health behaviors. Much of the literature discusses athletes' involvement in risk taking behaviors such as drug and alcohol use; however, there is a significant gap in the literature when it comes to discussions of athletes involvement in health behaviors, and understanding the relationship between these health behaviors and an individuals' involvement in sport. For the purposes of this study, health behaviors included dietary intake practices (vegetable, fruit, and dairy consumption) and physical activity habits (aerobic activity, strength activity, and flexibility activity). The study sample included traditional, full-time degree seeking undergraduate students who were randomly selected from a Midwestern university campus. Study participants were asked to complete an online 80 question survey; comprising a study sample of 1,339 participants. The study findings showed that high school (HS) sport involvement and sum of all sports for all four years of HS were significant predictors of the likelihood of meeting the recommendations for number of dairy servings per day and for number of days involved in aerobic, strength and flexibility physical activities. Results also demonstrated that sport involvement was a significant predictor of number of days involved in aerobic, strength, and flexibility physical activities. Lastly, the number of dairy servings and days involved in aerobic, strength, and flexibility activities were all significant with regards to specific HS sports of the study participants. Significant findings suggest a strong connection between high school sport involvement and its lasting effects on young adult health behaviors.Item Counterexamples to Strichartz Type Inequalities(University of Missouri--Columbia, 2013) Alhazaa, Khalifa; Alhazaa, Khalifa; University of Missouri-Columbia. Graduate School. Theses and Dissertations. Dissertations. 2013 Dissertations[ACCESS RESTRICTED TO THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI AT AUTHOR'S REQUEST.] The study of Strichartz s inequality is very important in the theory of nonlinear Shrodinger equations. The inequalities do not hold for all choice of constants. Many cases were settled. for instance, some cases were settled by Montegomery-Smith. In this paper we give a generalization to the usual Strichartz inequality using the Riesz potential. We then prove the inequality to hold in some cases and give counterexamples on other cases.
