"It is estimated that the people of the United States consume more than a million railroad carloads of fresh fruit and vegetables and almost a million carloads or meat each year. About half of this total volume of foodstuffs is transported by motor truck and the other half primarily by rail. When we add to this the millions of carloads of dry grains, cotton and other fibers, and the processed agricultural products moving to final markets, the vital role transportation plays in agriculture and in supplying our daily needs begins to come into focus."--First page.
