Abstract
"Purpose of the study: This family economic study reports on the comparative current and projected emergency financial positions of family units from a cross section of occupations in Henry County, Missouri in 1959, with emphasis on the financial provisions these families would or could make in the event of a major financial emergency. The sample reflects the impact of developments reported briefly in the introductory statement in this chapter. Financial provisions in event of a major financial emergency were limited to the adjustments different families would or could make in response to an interruption of their flow of income, such as would result if the major breadwinner were unable to work or out of work. For the purpose of comparative economic analyses in this study, "households" have been limited to family units meeting certain selective criteria. Specific purposes of this study were: 1. To determine the nature and amounts of the asset, liability, and net worth components of the balance sheet statements of families. 2. To determine the kinds and amounts of income and expense of families, and the difference between the two, both currently and in a projected form in tha event of a major financial emergency. 3. To reveal the types and amounts of projected financial adjustments such as emergency income provisions and expenditure reductions of families in the event of a major financial emergency, along with some view of the adequacy of these adjustments. 4. To identify relationships between the main financial items in the balance sheet, the current income-expense statement, the projected emergency income-expense adjustments, the projected emergency income-expense statement, and the occupational classification of families. 5. To identify relationships between certain of the family financial factors and selected additional socio-economic characteristics of families."--Page 4.
