Abstract
"Importance of this study: The production of leaner type pork to better meet existing consumers' wants is partially dependent on an efficient marketing structure for hogs. Producers will produce hogs of a specified weight and grade only if expected profits are greater for that weight and grade. A better knowledge of those factors influencing the profitability of marketing hogs at different weights should be of much value in making recommendations concerning the marketing weights of hogs. In addition it should be of some aid in making recommendations for improvements in the market pricing of hogs and hog products in order to better reflect consumers' demand. Purposes of this study: The major objectives of this study were as follows: (1) To examine those factors influencing the optimum market weight for hogs in recent years. (2) A comparison of optimum market weights with actual weights marketed in recent years. (3) Comparison of live and carcass values to determine relative pricing accuracy for different weight hogs. 4) To determine the relative prices needed to equate packers' margins for different weights of hogs. (5) To determine the influence of relative prices needed on the optimum marketing weights of hogs."--Page 3.
