Abstract
"In the chemical industry today, packed beds are used in many different ways. One of the most prominent uses of the packed bed is as a catalytic reactor. Packed beds are used very widely in industry for extracting or adding heat to or from a fluid stream. Such a transfer takes place in every fuel bed, in blast furnaces, in lime kilns, in foundry cupolas to name a few. The emphasis here is on the regenerative type of heat economizer. In heat regenerators the hot and cold fluids are passed alternatively through the packed bed; the packing material absorbs heat when the hot fluid flows through and gives it up when the cold fluid flows through; the process being repeated cyclically. Here the storage of heat in the bed is fundamental and therefore it is necessary to have a rather complete knowledge of the heat transfer properties such as heat capacities, thermal conductivities, heat transfer coefficient, etc. of the bed in order to use it effectively."--Introduction.
